The origin of the settlement goes real back till the roman empire. The wall fortifications, that even today surround the town, where ordered by Cosimo De' Medici around 1548: Torre della Linguella, Forte Stella, and Forte Falcone contain the most ancient and historical centre, where you can also find Napoleon's winter residence, readapted for him when he was exiled on the island between 1814 and 1815. If you visit Portoferraio you can't miss the walk though the small alleys, the steep descents and reaching the highest part of the historical centre that will let your sight wonder through the entire town and surrounding sea. In the evenings and till 12pm ca. you can find most shops and bars open and, when you reach the centre, you can also find the small open air market (at night only). Advised visits: walk on the medicean walls till Forte Falcone and Forte Stella, visit to the villa dei Mulini and Villa San Marino ( the first Napoleon's town house and the second his country house). The market day is: Friday morning.
